TODAY IS THE DAY - July 16, 2017

  • I've stayed up way past my bedtime so that I could be the first person to wish my awesome son, David Merrifield, happy birthday.

Thirty years ago tonight, I went to the hospital for the umpteenth time because I was in pokey labour with a child who was taking its sweet time arriving - only two weeks late! When the nurse suggested I go home and get some sleep, I said "No way! This kid has been keeping me up all night every night for three months. Today is THE day!"

The auntie-to-be brought sandwiches and tea, and spelled off dad helping me walk the halls. At noon, Dr Arnold came in and checked me over.

"Are you ready to get this show on the road?", he asked as he broke my water. Ten minutes later, I was in the delivery room, and ten minutes after that I had a quick glimpse of baby boy before the nurses whisked him away to NICU.

"What's wrong with my baby?" , I wailed, and the doctor laughed.

"Nothing serious, but after all his dilly-dallying, he was in such a hurry to get here that his poor wee face looks like he fell down a set of stairs."

By the time I'd had tea and an O'Henry bar, David Cameron Merrifield - Laura Christine had he been a girl - was back with us and just perfect.

    He still is just perfect!

    Love you forever,
    Mumma
