AMISH COUNTRY - October 31, 2017

Catherine Cummins's photo.

We wake to sun and the suss of cascading water. Arriving at our camp spot in Elliott Lake after dark, we could only hear not see the lake beside us. I enjoy a rare treat of sleeping in with Manny while Carl drives us to Blind River and then brings me hot Tim Horton's coffee in bed!

Snow squalls veil the road ahead and frosts the roadside trees. Sombre couples with rosy cheeks trot past in horse-drawn buggies; a memory of days gone by. Between storms the sun livens the last of the fall colour, the rusty oak and maroon maple leaves that still cling to the crowns of trees.

The Mississagi River runs deep and black and still beside the highway. Highlighted by the darkness of the water, groups of black and white bufflehead ducks bob and dive.
